WHO WE ARE
Lead Pastor - email
I am an extremely fortunate man! Teresa and I have been married for over 21 years. She is my best friend. We adopted our little girls Eliana and Mikayla from China. Eliana is 8 years old and Mikayla is 2 1/2 years old. They, both, are absolute joys! We are the most blessed parents on the face of the earth!
Teresa and I have a passion for adoption and the orphans in the world. We seek to encourage other people in their adoption journeys. Teresa volunteers her time with an organization called, Love Without Boundaries. Their mission is to provide the most loving and compassionate help possible to orphaned and impoverished children in China, and to show the world that every child, regardless of his or her needs, deserves to experience love and be treated with dignity and care.
Teresa and I have been at Gateway Bible Church, Northern Virginia/DC area, since 2011. God is doing great things at Gateway Bible Church! It is a joy seeing God make a difference in the lives of the people of our church and community. We love investing in the lives of people! My spiritual gift is “hanging out!” I love hanging out at Starbucks (God’s anointed coffee house) drinking my Grande (Blonde Roast) in a Venti cup and when I earn a free drink on my Gold Card (Yes! I have a Starbucks Gold Card!)…a Venti, Breve Latte, No foam, Extra hot, with 4 Splenda! Wow! Good stuff!
I completed my undergraduate work at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Go Bruins! We go to the NCAA basketball tournament every year and get bounced after the first round. I completed my Master’s and Doctor’s degrees at Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Enough about the degrees….I have, also, been known to do some teaching at Liberty University and Lancaster Bible College/Capital Seminary here in the Northern Virginia/DC area in my “spare” time.
Teresa and I have served churches in Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, Texas, California, and now Northern Virginia/DC. I love what I do! In Northern Virginia/DC we literally have the opportunity to impact the world for Jesus Christ!
Teresa and I are originally from God’s Country…Tennessee. Go Vols! We moved to Northern Virginia from Houston, Texas (our second home). I am a HUGE Houston Texans, Astros, and Rockets fan! I know. I know. But…I am loyal! In addition, I have been known to attend games and cheer for the Nationals during baseball season and the Wizards during basketball season. Go Nats! Go Wizards! Don’t be a hater…but I cannot bring myself to cheer for the Redskins…Instead, I pray for them on a regular basis.
I encourage you to join us at Gateway on a Sunday morning for coffee and worship. If you are a “seasoned veteran” of the faith or if you are still “searching” you will find a welcoming atmosphere. Did I say we have great coffee and pastries? The Gateway Cafe opens at 9:30AM!
Check out my ramblings about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness at www.jeffward.blogspot.com. In addition, you can read about the lessons I learned from my first mugging. Guess where? You guessed it…the city of brotherly love…Philadelphia!
Blessings to you!

So who am I? I am JAG. That is short for just a guy! I am just a guy trying to follow Jesus. Just a guy with a pretty cool family. Just a guy lucky enough to serve at a pretty cool church!
I love Jesus. He is my greatest love and passion. Without him and his sacrifice on the cross. I am nothing, I have nothing, and I would amount to nothing. In Matthew 16:24, Jesus said that anyone with aspirations of knowing Him must take up a cross and follow Him. That is my joy. It is a privilege to serve God. Till death do we part, in sickness and in health - all of that - He is my Lord. He has taken me on some amazing adventures already. I can't wait to see what is next.
I love my family. Emily is the real hero in our story. She is my wife of 12 years. I know - shocker! Someone has had the patience to put up with me that long. Wow! Emily is the assistant director of the forensics program at GMU. So now you know who has the brains in this marriage. She was runner up Ms. Illinois in her 20's and she looks just as great now. So you figured out who the good looking one is too! And she serves God with an undying passion. Now you know who is the spiritual one as well. We have 6 kids. Dryden and Soleil are the home-made kids. Dryden is 11, and Soleil is 9. We adopted 3 kids from China, Lily, Mackenzie and Thaddaeus. Mackenzie is 8, Lily is 7, and Thadd is 5. Spoiler alert because you may meet us at some point. Lily had a heart transplant 3 years ago. She's doing amazing. God has done some jaw-dropping things in our lives. Annabella (Salsa) is the most recent addition to our family. She is 8 months old - and we adopted her in NYC! She is a testimony to God's grace in our lives.
I love to serve the church. I have been at GBC for almost 3 years now. I love it! I did my undergrad work at Kentucky Christian University and my graduate work at Lincoln Christian Seminary. I have been learning who God is since I first decided to follow Jesus when I was 12-years-old.
A few other things about me! I am Canadian! I love to lift weights, play golf, basketball, hockey, volleyball, tennis - pretty much any sport! I also thought you should know my fanhood ahead of time. I am a diehard new England Patriots fan (I know, we have suffered through some lean years lately!!!). I also love the Montreal Canadiens, San Antonio Spurs, Washington Nationals, and I have not yet given up hope of a Tiger Woods return to prominence!
I hope to meet you when you check out our church!
Peace and Good will eh!

Hey everyone! I’m Stephen, and I serve on the pastoral team at Gateway. I started at Gateway in 2009, shortly after completing my Bachelors degree in Religion at Liberty University. While I was at Liberty I met a beautiful girl from Northern Virginia named Rhianna. We served together at Gateway while we dated, and in December 2014 we got married! Rhianna works with the Illuminate Kids Ministry and runs a small business with her mom in Fairfax. Serving together and dreaming big for the kingdom of God has really strengthened and grown our relationship! We will also be welcoming our first child in September of 2017! We couldn't be more stoked to be parents and are looking forward to this next chapter of our lives!
I was ordained at GBC in February 2012 and I’m involved in a lot of different things at GBC, but the things that get me wicked excited are working with a group of talented worshipers on the worship team, and watching as people surrender their hearts during our morning worship services. I also get to flex my creative muscles through the development of our visual communications. Basically, everything from series graphics to signage to our website and printed materials! I love being creative for the glory of God!
I haven’t always called Northern Virginia home. In fact, I was born and raised in Maine. No, I didn’t live in an igloo, and yes Maine is part of the U.S., not Canada (These are questions I have actually had to answer during my time working with teens!) I am a huge Boston Red Sox fan and I married a Yankees fan, so just imagine what that is like during baseball season!
When I’m not "doing ministry" you'll find me enjoying time with my family, playing guitar, creating art on Photoshop or laughing with friends. My favorite movies usually involve a zombie apocalypse, superheroes, or elves and dwarves. It's very rare that you will catch me watching a romantic comedy, but I don’t get to pick every time. I am a huge music buff, with a collection of guitars, ukuleles, and even a six streing banjo. I could talk about music all day, but to give you an idea, my favorite bands are Relient K, The Almost, Switchfoot, Owl City, Elevation Worship, Hillsong United, Coldplay and Mumford and Sons. I love to read books by J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Francis Chan, Frank Peretti, Robert J. Sawyer, Erwin McManus (just to name a few).
So that’s a little about me. I can’t wait to meet you this Sunday! - Stephen
